You waited for your STICKITUP order, ripped open the mailer, peeled off your favourite design — and now there's an air bubble sitting right in the middle of it. It happens to almost everyone, and it's almost always fixable, or avoidable in the first place. Every sticker we cut is printed on genuine waterproof vinyl, which actually makes bubbling easier to avoid than it is with the paper-based stickers a lot of shops pass off as vinyl. Here's the method our team uses when we test new designs before they go live on stickitup.ca.

Why Stickers Bubble in the First Place

Bubbles usually come down to one of three things: the surface wasn't clean, the sticker went down too fast, or the material trapped air because it was applied edge-first instead of centre-out. Vinyl is more forgiving than paper, but even our vinyl will trap air if you rush it.

What You'll Need

• A clean, dry, flat surface (laptop lid, water bottle, notebook cover)
• Rubbing alcohol or a lens wipe
• A credit card, gift card, or squeegee
• A pin or needle (for stubborn bubbles)
• About 60 seconds per sticker once you've got the motion down

Step-by-Step Application

1. Clean the surface first. Dust, oil from fingers, and residue from old stickers are the number one cause of bubbling. Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely before you start.

2. Peel slowly, not all at once. Lift one corner of the backing and peel it back about an inch. Leave the rest of the backing attached — you'll use it as a guide.

3. Position before you commit. Hold the sticker where you want it and lightly press just the exposed corner down. This "tack" point is your anchor.

4. Peel and press in one motion. Slowly pull the backing away at a low angle while smoothing the sticker down with your other hand (or the card), working from the centre outward. Don't pull the backing off completely and then try to place the sticker — that's when bubbles form.

5. Squeegee it out. Once it's fully down, go over the whole sticker with a card at a 45-degree angle, pushing from the middle toward the edges. This forces any remaining air out through the sides.

Fixing a Bubble That's Already There

If a small bubble shows up after application, don't panic and don't peel the whole thing back up.

• Small bubble: Push it toward the nearest edge with your thumb or the card.
• Bubble that won't move: Use a pin to prick a tiny hole in the centre of the bubble, then press the air out through the hole with your card. On a busy design, the pinhole is basically invisible.
• Large wrinkle: Gently lift just that section of the sticker with your fingernail, re-tack it, and squeegee again from the centre out.

Applying Stickers to Different Surfaces

Laptops: Clean with alcohol first — laptop lids often have an oily residue from hands. Avoid placing stickers over vents. If you're building out a full lid, our laptop skins collection is designed specifically for this.

Water bottles: Curved surfaces are trickier because the sticker has to stretch slightly. Apply in short, overlapping squeegee strokes rather than one long pass, and work from the centre toward both ends.

FAQ

Do vinyl stickers bubble more than paper stickers?
No — vinyl is actually more forgiving because it has slightly more give, which lets small air pockets work themselves out as you press. This is why we only print on real vinyl rather than laminated paper.

Can I reposition a sticker once it's stuck down?
Within the first few seconds, yes, if you lift gently from one edge. After that, most vinyl adhesives start to grip hard enough that repositioning risks tearing the design or leaving adhesive residue behind.

Will a pinhole fix ruin the sticker?
Not noticeably. A pin-sized hole in a busy, colourful design is essentially invisible once the air is pressed out and the surface is smoothed.

What's the best temperature for sticker application?
Room temperature, around 18–22°C. Cold surfaces make vinyl stiffer and harder to smooth, and very warm surfaces can cause the adhesive to grip unevenly before you've positioned the sticker.
